Registry Frequently Asked
Questions
What is the Donate Life Registry?
The New Mexico Donate Life Donor Registry is a
centralized, confidential registry that allows individuals to register their
decision to help others through organ and tissue donation.
The Donor Registry has been part of the New Mexico
driver’s license and identification card process since the late 1970’s.
The Donor Registry serves as a “Document of Gift”
for First Person Consent, which means that an individual’s decision to
donate will be honored at the time of death.
Is my New
Mexico Driver's License or ID Card Enough?
Yes! Individuals who register at the Motor
Vehicle Division (MVD) are registered organ and tissue donors.
The “DONOR Heart” on the New Mexico driver’s
license/ID card indicates that you give permission to donate your organs, eyes,
and tissue for transplant, research or education.
If you wish to specify the organs and tissues you
wish to donate, or limit how your gift will be used, you may do so in the
Update Donor Registry section.
Please share your decision to Donate Life with your
family and friends.
Can I Change my Registration to
'Non-Registered'
Yes, you can change your status to 'non-registered’
in the Update Donor Registry section.
If your Driver’s License or ID card has the “DONOR
Heart”, it can be removed the next time you renew your license or ID card at
MVD. The Donate Life Donor Registry will not have you listed as a donor.
What Happens if I Choose
Not to Register as a Donor?
If an individual is not registered on the Donate
Life Donor Registry at MVD or online, the next-of-kin or Durable Power of
Attorney for Healthcare will be contacted at the time of death and asked if they
wish to donate on behalf of their loved one. It is important to inform
your family of your wishes.
